exhibitions: Parkcrest Elementary Mural Project

Bear Door, Kindergarten

Bear Door, Kindergarten

This year the students at Parkcrest Elementary in Kamloops, BC decided to rejuvenate their school with a series of painted murals decorating various doors throughout the school as well as the walls of the Aboriginal Education Room. Individual classes discussed appropriate themes and ideas with the Artist in Residence, Joey Nash, and Parkcrest's Metis Education Worker, Christina Boyer. By exploring local and West Coast geography as well as the seasons, the cycles of the sun and moon, various wildlife and the symbols they embody, these students communicated inspiring messages through their unique painting class. Each mural takes from the last, combining bright, blocked colours, traditional first nations techniques and styles, bold lines and outdoor settings. This project was funded through Artstarts, First Nations Education Council Kamloops and Parkcrest Parent Advisory Council.
