Hear You Are

[murmur] is a documentary oral history project that records stories and memories told about specific geographic locations. In each of these locations there is a [murmur] sign with a phone number on it that anyone can call to listen to a story while experiencing being right where the story takes place.

The stories are as personal as the relationship people have with the spaces they inhabit. Secret histories are unearthed, private truths unveiled, and tales as diverse as the city itself are discovered and shared.

Signals in the Streets

Do city streets provide anonymity and distance, or can they be a point of connection between us? What traces do we leave when navigating the maze of alleys and avenues in the urban landscape? What signals do we send and receive?

This is an ongoing series of photographs taken in public spaces - of anonymous messages left for us, the public. Cries to action, contemporary memorials, or tokens of affection, the focus here is on documenting affirmative messages rendered visible through the author's choice of medium and location. This is a look at cities, the people in them, and the way we forge connections with one another.

SHIFTCHANGE: The only thing constant is change

ShiftChange is the latest creative offering from the AGO Youth Council. The project began as an exploration of the themes of transformation and identity and was eventually distilled to one idea: the only thing constant is change.

While the exact nature of change experienced might vary, change is a common part of human experience. Whether they are small, fluctuating changes made on a regular basis, or larger changes made only a few times in a lifetime, change affects all of us.

The project launched in September. Look out for our paste-ups installations around Toronto!

city beautification

The primary goal of the City Beautification Ensemble is the vigorous and continual battle against the ever increasing Blight of Dullness. The CBE believes that colours have long been denied their rightful place in modern urban planning and infrastructure. They ask "why must concrete always be grey?" and wonder if a dash of colour might not do more for the people of this city.

The Ensemble believe that the colour of any given landscape should be considered as an integral part of urban design, as the treatment of the spaces between and around buildings is often of comparable importance to the design of the buildings themselves. Through direct colour intervention the CBE strive to change the notable effects of Grey on the citizens living in the City of Toronto.

Mural Madness (AGO Youth Council)

Working with mural artist Francesca, the AGO Youth Council collaborated with youth from Sketch to spraypaint a mural just a few blocks north of the AGO, in the Hydroblock playground. The wall was grey cement to begin with, and now has both sides painted with vibrant murals.

Check out the rest of this exhibition to see how they did it.

Carbon Copy

The AGO Youth Council worked in Spring 2007 with guest artist Jeffrey McLarnon to create a forest out of paper waste produced by the AGO in one month that would otherwise have been recycled. Through this work the Youth Council is hoping to spread awareness throughout the artistic community about the dangers of carbon dioxide and other waste by-products in our atmosphere that lead to climate change and environmental degradation.
